But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life."

Life wouldn't be the same (or even life) without obstacles. Your life is happening now, this is it. The irate client, the mortgage and the credit card bill are life. It's your attitude towards them that make it "real" or not. Be optimistic, hold your head up, look people in the eye, smile, take responsibility and make decisions. Your life will become more than real, it will become amazing.
